teambuilding

Cincinnati, OH – For the second straight year, I’ve worked with emerging leaders as part of the Asian Pacific Americans group at a Fortune 25 Company. This year we had two activities, one for team-building and the other for skill-building.

The first was a storytelling session around a camp fire. It was a casual event where we talked about the value of storytelling and some basic ideas to keep in mind, and then just shared stories to learn more about each other.

The second activity the next morning was on motivating leadership. We followed the HTW standard format of Theory -> Practice -> Application and by the end had the participants practicing leadership skills in work specific scenarios.

UPDATE: I received a message from one of the planners with feedback on the event:

  • 100% of attendees rated the session Excellent (5 out of 5).
  • It was the highest rated event of the entire week.
  • There were a few great verbatims: “This was the best day of all.” “Awesome!” “We’ve already recommended you for next year’s session.”
Thanks go to all of the awesome participants. To see if this would work for your group, check out our corporate humor programs to find out more.

Boston, MA – It’s always bittersweet when someone you’ve trained is able to execute something without your help. On the one hand, you’re a little sad you weren’t needed for them to be successful, but on the other (larger) hand, you’re ecstatic they were able to be awesome without you there.

That’s what happened this past week in Boston. While I was in Las Vegas teaching improv, one of my clients was off leading their own team-building activity without me. Through a few sessions of working closely together, I was able to teach the client a series of activities that would help her rock a 80-person team-building event at Fenway Park.

The series of activities, which included Telephone Pictionary, was well received by the group, with some notable bits of feedback:

  • “More fun than I would have expected!”
  • “I wish we had more time for this portion, and I usually dread forced networking like this!”
  • “The event team did an AWESOME job!!!!!”

Congratulations to Maria and her team! If you want help running your next off-site, check out our humor coaching program.

Columbus, OH – I’ve worked on some great team-building events in the past, but nothing quite like what we lead a group through this past week.

When I was tasked with coming up with a team-building activity for 350 people for 3 hours and a $3,000 budget, I knew it was going to be tough. But I had an awesome sub-team with creative minds and a lot of passion.

So what do you do with such limited constraints? A Duct-Tape Fashion Show of course. With limited supplies and only 90 minutes to build, 30 teams came up with some incredible fashion outfits made out of duct tape. Then they paraded them down a fashion runway in front of their peers, managers and direct reports.

I was lucky enough to be the MC for the fashion show and I’ve never had such a hard time keeping a straight face because the outfits were incredible. I wish I could show you the pictures (they are phenomenal) but I have been sworn to secrecy due to some rather interesting photos (let’s just say one manager found himself in a rather elaborate red Duct-Tape dress).

If you’d like help hosting your own Duct Tape Fashion Show, contact us about your upcoming teambuilding event.

Cincinnati, OH – I had the privilege of working with the Asian Pacific Americans (APA) group at a Fortune 25 company for not one but two different activities this past week.

The first was an improvised talent show where I was blown away by what people were able to create with just 45-minutes of prep (including a personalized parody of Boom Boom Pow by Black Eyed Peas)

The second was the Humor That Works Crash Course which covered the reason humor is needed at work and why you should be the one to use it, and a workshop hitting on some of the basics of how to be more humorous.

Both sessions went very well and not only helped with team-building, they walked away with steps for using humor at work as soon as they return their real jobs next week.

Click to find out what you could learn from the Humor That Works Humor Bootcamp.

Update: We got the results back from the survey and they were incredibly positive–an average rating of 4.2/5.0. Regarding the Improv Show, attendees said “I love how much people opened up themselves” and it was “Best creative show I’ve ever seen.” For the Humor Crash Course, the feedback was “Fun relevant activities” and “Tons of fun.”

Humor at Work: Team-Building for US Navy

September 15, 2010

Brooklyn, NY – I just got back from a great workshop where I partnered with ComedySportz New York for an improv-based training for the US Navy. Every 2 years they work with CSz NY for a team-building event that uses improv and this year I co-facilitated. The group was a little hesitant at first, but [...]
